Providing Access to Clean Water to Support Physically Disabled Women, to Reduce Violence Against Women and to Reduce Disease

ISSUE:
This project team of eight women with physical disabilities live in a Kigali slum without access to clean water, making the daily journey to remote water sources very difficult. The team further sees water borne diseases and domestic violence as critical issues facing their community. An accessible source of clean water will not only eliminate a cause of disease, but will also allow the team to reach women gathering around the water source to educate on issues of health and domestic violence.

SOLUTION:
People With the Same Purpose believe that if they install public water access points and if distribution of water is organized, violence and conflict in the community will decrease and the health of the population will improve. To supplement this service, the project team will offer women's rights trainings at the water access points so that women are better informed about their rights and how to claim them. Project goals include to:

  • Increase access to clean water
  • Reduce violence against women and children caused by lack of access to water
  • To decrease disease and increase hygiene of the population
  • To see local children who collect water able to attend school

IMPACT:
150 families will directly benefit from having access to clean water. In addition, 80 women within the community will receive trainings on their rights and hygiene.
