Be Ready

Providing Fuel-Efficient Stoves and Training to Reduce Violence Against Women Associated with Firewood Collection

ISSUE:
The Be Ready project team has noted that domestic violence and sexual exploitation of young children are rampant problems in their community. They have identified limited supplies of firewood as a main trigger for both forms of abuse as it causes meals to not be prepared on time and results in children having to wander deep into the woods where they are easy targets for rape.

SOLUTION:
Through trainings for women and men on domestic violence and women's rights, in addition to the production of efficient stoves and planting of trees for firewood, men will be educated about the negative effects of physical abuse and children will decrease their risk for sexual exploitation. Project goals include to:

  • Reduce number of domestic abuse victims
  • Reduce number of violated children
  • Create peace within families

IMPACT:
Be Ready will work with 250 families that experience domestic violence in their community of rural Southwest Rwanda.
